More than 10 actors have played the Joker character in both DC movies and animations. A whole lot of them were nothing to call for and a handful of these actors made the Joker character legendary. In this article, we are going to analyze these actors’ performances and who did the Joker character more justice. Stick with me.
So, who played the Joker character best?
From Joaquin Phoenix Oscar-winning performance to Heath Ledger’s amazing and not in any doubt exceptional portrayal of the Joker and every other actor that came before, in between, and after, we the audience have seen the many faces or, better still, many voices of the Joker. But who made us fall in love more with the Joker?
We will go from the least to the best.
Actors such as Brent Spiner, Troy Baker, Jeff Bergman, Jeff Bennett, Michael Emerson, Cameron Monaghan, Zack Galifianakis, and more all played the Joker. Even Jared Leto gave it a try in Suicide Squad. Although I loved Jared Leto as an actor, he doesn’t come in the top 5 best actors who played the Joker. Now, keep in mind that this doesn’t have anything to do with Leto himself but everything to do with the writer of the Suicide Squad movie.
The writers made a huge, influential, and very much-liked character so insignificant that it gave Jared, not more than a couple of seconds to display his wit. With such a complex character like the Joker that was more than doing the impossible. It would have been better to exclude the Joker from the whole movie than give a snippet of it all. I mean, think about it, what was the significance of the Joker in the Suicide Squad? Yes, he is an important part of Harley Quinn. But Harley would have also been fine on her own.
If we are going to really look at the actors that played the Joker best, starting from the bottom up, it would be Joaquin Phoenix.
Yes, I know. He won an Oscar dammit. He should top the list. OK, Phoenix was good, there is no argument there. And this is why he is on our list, but he isn’t just the best. We will tell you why and why not.
Joaquin Phoenix gave us a good background story of the Joker. I mean, after watching the Joker movie, I kind of like what Batman had done to him less. Yes, he is a psychopath but he didn’t just become on because he was born that way. society kinda pushed him towards it. The problem wasn’t really in Phoenix’s performance but the storyline. We, the audience, love the Joker when he is battling Batman. That’s the Joker most people want to see and kind of fell in love with. The Joker is made for Batman. Without him, we just can’t really get that this guy with the green hair and weird lipstick is the Joker. Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker wasn’t the complete Joker. Phoenix didn’t get to play him out. If he had, maybe he just might top the list.
Up a number is Jack Nicholson of the Batman 1989.
Jack was perfect. Not the best but the perfect Joker. His smile said so, his laugh said so. He was the perfect anti for the Batman. He was simply too good. Nicholson was funny and mad. Twisted and kind of straightforward. Just who the Joker is. But DC still had to experiment with other actors. Then came Mark Hamill.
Mark Hamill of the Batman: The Animated Series 1992-1995. Yes, all we did was listen to Mark’s voice, but have you watched the series and simply try to pay attention to only Mark’s portrayal of the Joker? Mark Hamill could very well be the best. The Joker is not all suicidal and a complete maniac. Something Jack Nicholson tried to play out. The Joker was both that and the opposite. Mark did it. Like Nicholson, Hamill played the Joker character perfectly but just a bit better.
Now for the best, that would be Heath Ledger.
Heath Ledger’s Joker gave the Dark Knight’s trilogy meaning and one of the best ever DC movies. Heath gave the audience a different view of the Joker that somehow fitted with his personality. I mean it took three movies to uncover his masterplan. This is what we know the Joker is capable of but don’t see often in movies. Ledger was funny and no less the perfect Joker giving us a never before seen portrayal of the Joker we all seem to know.
